Porous Media Visualization Lab · Technion
We make rock transparent.
Flow, reaction, fracture and deformation inside porous media, watched pore by pore as they happen.

Research
Four ways we look inside the rock.
Each theme opens onto its own page section with the full story, papers and movies.
01
Deformation
How pressurized flow compacts, shears and fractures a porous pack, tracked by PIV and strain mapping.
Explore →02
Multiphase and miscible flow
Fingering, trapping and mixing when one fluid displaces another in the pore network.
Explore →
03
Reactive transport
Dissolution and precipitation reshape the pore space and steer the flow.

04
Deformation memory
Rock remembers how it was pushed: hidden deformation revealed by correlation analysis.

About the lab
Porous media are all around us.
The cells in our body, the desk we sit next to, and the ground we walk on. The Porous Media Visualization (PMV) Lab, in the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the Technion, studies flow, reaction and deformation in porous media by visualizing the dynamics.
Fluids that we extract (water, gas, oil) or inject (liquefied CO₂, wastewater) displace and react with the resident fluid, and can deform and even fracture the matrix. To study this, we replace soil and rock with an equivalent transparent porous material developed in the lab, and quantify transport, reaction and deformation with fluorescence imaging and an ultra-high-speed camera.
The lab is led by Assoc. Prof. Yaniv Edery.
